Thanks for joining Abdul’s Phone Banking Team. We join from across the country to call voters who should know about Abdul’s agenda: get money out of politics, put money in your pocket, and pass Medicare for All.
Our goal: connect with voters through the phonebanking dialer as a pleasant, informative voice for the campaign. Follow the current script, stay curious, and have fun.
- Get trained. Join a virtual phonebanking group session. Experienced phonebankers can also watch the current training video on the Phone Bank for Abdul page by scrolling to “Get Trained.”
- Sign up for a virtual session. Use the Phone Bank sign-up. The access link will be emailed to you.
- Choose how you will call. After training, you can join regular virtual sessions, attend an in-person session in your area, or make calls on your own.
- Open the dialer. The dialer is called Scale to Win. It walks you through the script and can be used on a computer, or with a phone and computer together.
¶ Before and during a call session
- Open the Phone Bank for Abdul home page.
- Choose the audio setup that works for you. The onboarding guide shows a computer plus phone for audio as one option.
- Preview the script before making any calls. The campaign responds to the needs of the Senate race in real time, so review the current script before every session.
- When you are ready, go to the dialer and start calling. Every call is practice for the next one; pause and find the right answer when you need to.
- Use Ctrl+F on Windows or Command+F on Mac to search the Scale to Win page for a keyword in the scripted responses.
Hours: the supplied orientation PDF says the dialer is open to trained phonebankers from 12–8:30 pm Eastern. The supplied onboarding graphic says 12–8 pm, seven days a week. Because these materials differ, check the current Phone Bank home page before planning a session. Use Timeanddate to convert Eastern Time if you are calling from another time zone.
¶ Training and support
- Virtual group sessions are for new and returning phonebankers. You can listen to the training, or turn audio off and leave the Zoom room open for support while you call.
- Use the session chat for questions, help during the calling period, and debriefing afterward.
- If you are calling on your own, ask questions in the Slack #team-phone-banking channel.
- Invite friends and remember that every call helps build the campaign.
- Advocate for Abdul and connect the conversation to the campaign’s major policy message: money out of politics, money in your pocket, and Medicare for All.
- Ask questions and be curious about each person’s experiences, motivations, and priorities. Listen before you respond.
- Acknowledge questions, concerns, or criticisms, then return to the positive, substantive message of Abdul’s platform.
- Meet people where they are and leave a positive impression, even when someone is not ready to support Abdul.
Use these as conversation prompts, not as a replacement for the current Scale to Win script. Check the live campaign materials for current wording, dates, polls, endorsements, and policy details.
- Education: invest in children and public education, protect students from environmental hazards, and expand programs that help children learn and thrive.
- Jobs: support small businesses, challenge monopolies, protect workers, and make wages strong enough to support a family.
- Housing: make it safer, faster, and less costly to create housing that working and middle-class people can afford.
- Environment: hold corporate polluters accountable and protect Michigan’s air, water, land, and Great Lakes.
- Healthcare: guarantee access to healthcare and build on Abdul’s public health experience, including his support for Medicare for All.
- Foreign policy: prioritize diplomacy and justice, and invest more U.S. resources at home.
- Cost of living: make groceries, medication, housing, and everyday life more affordable through a fairer economy and tax system.
- Corruption: hold powerful officials accountable and get corporate money out of politics.
- Civil rights: identify systemic barriers, protect individual rights, and make universal programs work for communities that have been excluded.
- Democracy: protect voting rights, make voting easier, and defend peaceful speech, assembly, and protest.
When voters raise concerns, stay respectful and ask what is behind the question. Use the current script and approved campaign links for the full response.
- “Is Abdul electable?” Ask what the voter means by electability. The campaign’s case centers on Abdul’s public health leadership, strong voter response, organizing experience, and broad coalition.
- “Is Abdul’s platform too radical?” Explain the people-first goals in plain language: affordable healthcare, economic security, and less corporate control of politics.
- “We just need to beat the Republican.” Connect a clear affordability, healthcare, and democracy agenda to the work of building turnout and persuading voters.
- “We need a progressive who can win.” Describe Abdul as a candidate with a substantive agenda and a message meant to reach people across the political spectrum.
- “Abdul is inexperienced.” Point to his record as a public health leader and the results he has delivered, then return to the voter’s concern.
- “What about his name?” Ask what concern the voter is expressing. Stay calm, do not argue about identity, and keep the conversation focused on issues and respect.
