Less than 20% of Michiganders answer calls from unknown numbers, which means we NEVER make contact with them. How do we reach the over 80% of who who never answer cold calls? Simple. We contact them through someone they know. Everyone in the state is a known person to SOMEONE. And maybe that someone is YOU, but the campaign just doesn't know it yet.
That's why we're using the Reach App. With less than a month until Election Day, this is our most effective way to turn out voters across Michigan: by telling each other (on an app) who we all know and finding the best person who can reach that voter.

The Reach App lets you match registered voters we are trying to reach with people you already know. It puts everything the campaign knows about voters in the palm of your hand. Reach allows you to:
- Tell the campaign that your friends and family are not “strangers." They don't need cold calls anymore because you know them and can reach them personally.
- Keep track of which friends and family you have already contacted
- Give the campaign information we don't have: who is voting for us and who is not.
- See which people in your contacts have not yet voted, and need an extra nudge.
- What it does NOT do: Reach does not take any contact information from you. We don't need your friends' phone numbers. We need YOU (someone who can actually reach them.)
- Download the app and join the campaign: Install Reach on iOS or Android (or access the web version at app.reach.vote), create your account and enter this campaign invite code (A8T2UU).
- Build your network: Search for anyone you know by name and add them to your network or match your contacts to voters (the Import tool) to see which of your friends, family, and community are registered to vote in Michigan.
- Start reaching out: Call or message your friends the way you normally do, catch up with them (like a real human being) then ask them how they are feeling about the election. They will usually tell you how they feel. And if they haven't been paying attention, that's the best person to talk to, because they may not vote unless you talk to them personally!
- Tell us what they said: If your contacts are voting for us, that's great. Tell us in the app so the campaign knows. (If not, tell us that too so no one else wastes their time.) Any information you can give the campaign saves us from having to cold call and your friends from being cold called.
- likely volunteer: people you should recruit to join the Reach team
- turnout target: people who may not vote unless you talk to them
- persuasion to support: people who may be undecided between Rogers and Abdul and you may be the one to sway them
- not yet voted: has not turned in a ballot or voted early yet
- Don't sound like a bot: Send messages in your own voice, not a spam message. Text like you normally text!
- Ask, do not lecture: This campaign is built on positive vibes, not fear-mongering. Ask what's on their mind - rent, student debt, healthcare, local roads, local schools, or just plain old affording groceries. People are much more likely to turn out and vote if they are voting for their hopes, not their fears.
- Tell them your “why": Why do you care about Abdul winning? What would it mean to you if he lost? Your real, personal reasons are 100 times more convincing than talking points.
- Keep it low-pressure: You're catching up with someone you know, not running a phone bank. You don't have to just start by talking about the election. Ask them about their family, make plans to grab some coffee or finally see their new baby.
- Respect the boundaries: If someone isn't in the mood to talk politics right now, do not be aggressive. Treat them like a human being. We want them voting with us in November, not tuning out.
- Don't make it weird: Voter data and voting records are public, but you don't have to go into details. You are being helpful and providing them information about voting, not snooping.
Campaign staff and volunteer Campaign Captains are available in the Reach Chat and on the campaign slack to help brainstorm replies, troubleshoot technical issues, or answer campaign questions. They can also be reached via our Slack channel #team-texting.
